Ice Skating

General Skate Schedule

Learn to ice skate, or improve your current skills with our United States Figure Skating coaches. Lessons are scheduled for 25-minute sessions. Prior experience is not required. Lessons are open to all ages beginning at 3 years through adults. Classes are available as private (1 participant to 1instructor), buddy (2 participants to 1 instructor. Adult skates are available for rent. Youth must bring their own skates. Lessons are scheduled during the Johnson Ice Rink General Skate Hours or a shared rental time. All sessions expire one year from date of purchase.

All classes will be held together on the ice. Please register for the class that best fits your child's skating ability.

New to the Ice

Calling all newbies! Join your neighbors and professional figure skating instructors for fun, weekly group lessons at MIT’s Johnson Ice Rink.  This class is for youngsters who have never been on the ice before.  In New to the Ice skaters will learn how to safely fall and stand back up on the ice, three ways to forward skate, forward gliding, and be introduced to backward skating. Participants must provide their own skates. Helmets are recommended for this level (bike helmets work great).

Learning Skills

Learning skills is for youth who have been on the ice before and are interested in learning specific skills to improve their skating.  In this class, instructors will review ice safety and forward skating.  Skaters will learn one and two foot forward and backward gliding, two-foot turning, and stopping.  Participants must provide their own skates.  Helmets are recommended for this level (bike helmets work great).

Improving Techniques

This class is for individuals with skating experience but no or limited instructional experience.   Skaters will learn the proper technique for forward stroking, backward stroking, learn about inside and outside edges, two ways of stopping, crossovers, and more.  For this class, skaters should be comfortable on the ice and be able to follow direction. Participants must provide their own skates.
