Here are 7 Ways to Walk 10K Steps at MIT Recreation
There are lots of ways to get in extra steps each day. You can park your car further away from work, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or fit in a quick walk at lunchtime. Here on the MIT campus, there are even more options: you can run the Charles River, walk the underground tunnels, or even, head over to the gym. In fact, we have 7 different ways you can get some extra steps in at MIT Recreation. Have you tried them all?
Treadmill
Located at: Z-Center 2nd & 3rd Floors, Alumni/Wang Fitness Floor
Of all the ways to get in your steps on a rainy or stifling day, this one probably comes to mind the most! Treadmills are easy to use (step on and press Quickstart), flexible (uphill or down? Preprogrammed or manual?) and versatile. We have about 30 treadmills between our two facilities, and they are a great way to get some steps into your day, no matter what the weather outside!
Notes: Treadmills can get popular during peak workout times, like lunch breaks or right after work. All our cardio equipment have 30 minute time limits, and you will need to sign out the machine you intend to use at the fitness desk first. You will also need a set of fitness clothes to change into, as casual or work attire is not allowed on our fitness floors.
Elliptical
Located at: Z-Center 2nd & 3rd Floors, Alumni/Wang Fitness Floor
Ellipticals are great, low-impact ways to get in your steps. Similar to a treadmill, they are programmable and adjustable to your fitness level. We have two varieties on our fitness floors: moving and stationary armed. Between all locations, we have over 20 of these machines for use.
Notes: Ellipticals also can get popular during peak workout times, like lunch breaks or right after work. All our cardio equipment have 30 minute time limits, and you will need to sign out the machine you intend to use at the fitness desk first. You will also need a set of fitness clothes to change into, as casual or work attire is not allowed on our fitness floors.
Stepmill
Located at: Z-Center 3rd Floor, Alumni/Wang Fitness Floor
The Stepmill is a great way to get your steps and a good aerobic workout, without going for a run. This machine mimics the motion of walking upstairs, through the use of a small cascading staircase that the user walks up. This machine can take a little adjustment at first, so expect to spend a little time getting used to it if it’s your first time.
Notes: All our cardio equipment have 30 minute time limits, and you will need to sign out the machine you intend to use at the fitness desk first. You will also need a set of fitness clothes to change into, as casual or work attire is not allowed on our fitness floors.
ARC Trainer
Located at: Z-Center 2nd Floor, Alumni/Wang Fitness Floor
The ARC Trainer provides a walking motion similar to an elliptical, but is designed to be even more bio-mechanically correct. This machine is another great choice for low-impact, joint-friendly walking. Add resistance for a tougher workout, or increase the incline.
Notes: All our cardio equipment have 30 minute time limits, and you will need to sign out the machine you intend to use at the fitness desk first. You will also need a set of fitness clothes to change into, as casual or work attire is not allowed on our fitness floors.
AMT
Located at: Z-Center 2nd Floor, Alumni/Wang Fitness Floor
The AMT, or Adaptive Motion Trainer, is designed to be a combination of the treadmill and the elliptical. Like a treadmill, you control the length of your stride – something that cannot be changed with an elliptical. Like the elliptical, you never contact with the machine, causing less pounding and joint stress – something that cannot be achieved on the treadmill.
Notes: All our cardio equipment have 30 minute time limits, and you will need to sign out the machine you intend to use at the fitness desk first. You will also need a set of fitness clothes to change into, as casual or work attire is not allowed on our fitness floors.
Indoor Track
Located at: Z-Center, above Johnson Ice Arena
On the third floor of the Z-Center (technically in the Johnson Athletics Center, attached to the Z-Center), you will find our Indoor Track. This is a great indoor option when you don’t have the time to change into workout gear, just don’t want to, or find the fitness floors to be too busy. Talk a walk, go for a run, it’s all at your pace and on your time! Occasionally the track will be in use by MIT Athletics, so check the Open Recreation Schedule before stopping by.
Notes: You will NOT need a set of fitness clothes to change into, just a pair of comfortable walking shoes.
Outdoor Track
Located at: Z-Center, beside Johnson Ice Arena
The Henry Steinbrenner Stadium & Track just outside the Z-Center is a great option for those great weather days. Get some fresh air, vitamin D and a few steps in! The track is in use at times for practices and games, so check the Open Recreation Schedule before you stop by.
Notes: You will NOT need a set of fitness clothes to change into, just a pair of comfortable walking shoes.
