Due to changes and additions from the Massachusetts Recreational Camp Code, we will be unable to host sailing as an activity during summer 2024 day camp. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we explore options for our future camp years. If you are looking for a sailing specific summer camp you can still find that on MIT’s campus at – https://www.charlesriversailingacademy.com/.

Sailing at Camp FAQ's
Who is eligible to participate in sailing activities during MIT Day Camp?
No sailing experience is required! Due to the specifications of the boats, the minimum age to attend sailing sessions is age 9 and up. Campers age 9 and up who pass the Qualified Swimmer test + water tread may elect to attend the sailing sessions. Both beginners and experienced sailors are welcome.
Which weekdays include the sailing activity option?
Sailing is offered in session on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Day Camp weeks with a Monday holiday will have a Thursday session only to accommodate the swim test requirement on Tuesday
What should my child bring to be prepared to sail?
We recommend campers arrive with their water bottle, appropriate clothing for the conditions (consider sun protection including sunscreen and hats), and protective footwear that can get wet (old sneakers or water shoes are good options). Footwear is mandatory on the dock. Personal sunscreen is recommended and should be applied before arriving. MIT Sailing will provide the required PFDs and helmets.
What safety precautions are taken while at the MIT Sailing Pavilion for day camp?
Campers are required to wear a PFD and helmet while on the water, which will be provided. Footwear is mandatory on the dock and there is a no-running rule in place on the dock to protect from splinters and falls. All classes have a low instructor to student ratio and sailing is supervised by safety launches and qualified instructors at all times.
All campers who can participate in the sailing activity have passed the Qualified Swimmer test + water tread. In addition, instructors and dockstaff will be providing coaching and aid to promote safety while sailing, both on the dock and on the water.
Weather conditions: If conditions are not conducive to sailing, campers will be directed to a different activity for that time.
