MIT Recreation’s Graduating Students

Graduation is a bittersweet time. While we are happy to congratulate every grad on their hard work and accomplishments, we are sad to see them go! Here at MIT Recreation, we have our own graduating students to say a fond farewell too. We know they are off to do amazing things, but we will miss them just the same!

Katherine

Congrats on your Degree Kat! What made you choose Biological Engineering?

I was always really interested in diseases, medicine, and how things work in general I suppose, but I wanted to learn more than just biology. Bio Engineering gives you the tools to learn all the foundations of living systems and then some, so you can actually ‘engineer’ things that are dynamic and living or use engineering concepts to tackle biological problems. The basic concept of it is just so awesome.

What’s next for you now that you are graduating?

I’ll be starting as a Consulting Analyst at Accenture over the summer! But, I’ll still be around working here until I start working full time!

We will miss you at the Fitness Desk when you leave! What led you to get involved in Recreation?

I did the Exercise and Wellness FPOP (freshman pre-orientation program) and Steph Smith was one of the people who ran it and got me interested in joining the fitness team!

What is your favorite form of Recreation?

At the moment it’s between high intensity interval training and plain old strength training as my favorite type of exercise, it depends on the day!

What will you miss most about MIT Recreation?

A part of me wants to say free gym membership, but the thing I will miss the most is being surrounded by the best and brightest people in the world. It’s pretty frightening how intelligent people here are, but its extremely motivating at the same time.

If you could leave the MIT community with one piece of advice, what would it be?

I would probably encourage people not to underestimate the amazing people MIT fosters and helps develop, the people are what makes MIT as amazing as it is!

Liz

Congrats on your degree Liz! What made you choose Mathematics and Computer Science?

It’s a very flexible major that allowed me to take very analytical classes in math and computer science, but also in business, economics, and women’s and gender studies.

What’s next for you now that you are graduating?

I’m moving out to Portland, Oregon to work as a Procurement Analyst at Nike.

That’s such an exciting move! We hope you come back and visit us. What led you to get involved in Recreation?

I had worked for other areas in DAPER (Athletics as well as in the DAPER offices) and have always been passionate about fitness. Someone in DAPER recommended that I apply to fill some extra time, and I stayed with fitness because I love interacting with our diverse group of patrons and learning more about the department.

What is your favorite form of Recreation?

I love walking and running. I walk almost everywhere and run to do errands and get around whenever I can.

What will you miss most about MIT Recreation when you head out to Portland?

I’ll definitely miss the people here most. All of the students and staff have made an incredible impression on me.

If you could leave the MIT community with one piece of advice, what would it be?

Spend time doing what you love, rather than doing exactly what’s expected of you.
